Fat is twice as energy dense as carbohydrate. Fat has 9 calories per gram versus 4 calories per gram from carbohydrates. If the above statement were true and the body could burn fat at high intensity do you not think  that professional athletes would be consuming fat based sports drinks? They would get twice as much energy from a fat based sports drink than a carb based drink? So why don’t they? Why haven't the multi-million dollar research teams created fat based sports drinks? The reason is because they know the body cannot effectively metabolise fat for energy in time to meet the energy requirements of intense exercise.

Fat burning requires the presence of oxygen which is why it is cardio based aerobic exercise that burns fat. Low intensity cardio is best for fat burning because the lower energy demand allows the body enough time to access the fat stores, transport and then breakdown the fat to yield the energy required. But this approach will only work if the body is sufficiently low in stored muscle carbohydrate.

You’ve probably been told or read somewhere that high intensity training is better for fat burning. The theory is that a greater number of calories are burnt when exercising this way and, although the percentage of calories burnt from fat is lower, the actual number of calories from fat is higher when compared with low intensity cardio exercise.

Consider this professional athletes have millions of dollars invested in research to improve their sports performance and gain and edge over their competitors. Professional road cyclists, professional football players, basket ball players etc, think of any sport that requires decent amounts of energy expenditure and what do they all have in common?
